When I got my U.S. citizenship in 2020 people kept asking me: why??

The previous four years had seen overt racism, sexism, and xenophobia become normalized, as this country veered into extreme polarization and social unrest under the Trump presidency.

By the time I was sworn in, in October 2020, the BLM protests and Covid mask/vax wars were raging, and the Q-Anon conspiracy was peaking. It felt like the country was in the grips of literal insanity, all of which would come to a head with the January 6 insurrection.

Why, indeed, would I choose to swear allegiance to a country in the grips of what seemed like the mother of all existential crises?

Because I could not continue to live in the United States, and to benefit from the freedom and the opportunities that I had found here - freedom and opportunities, which, for better and for worse, have brought people here for centuries - and not participate fully in this democracy.

Yesterday, I voted early to try to ease my election anxiety. A vote for sanity and for humanity 🙏

Last week I got to participate in a World Health Organization Europe campaign to REDEFINE ALCOHOL.

You can tune in here to watch it live at 9am ET / 3pm CET tomorrow on the @whoeurope YouTube channel.

So many of the experts interviewed spoke about the need for a societal shift in how alcohol is viewed and consumed - similar to what we saw with cigarettes in the early 2000s.

And well, sober curious is it!

I got so emotional listening to the testimonies of people who had stepped away from using booze as their default way to relax, destress, and socialize - and the massive shifts they had seen in their physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing as a result.

The verdict: sobriety is not just for “alcoholics.” Everyone can benefit from being sober curious 🦋

“The only way to increase the birth rate is to roll back women’s rights. The right to safe, legal abortion; the right to education; the right to financial independence; the right to marry whom and if they choose.”

The post-patriarchy we have been living in since the 1960s is so new and fragile still. Sitting here menstruating and feeling simultaneously so grateful for the life I have been able to choose - and so fearful for what the future could hold 😥

I put this on my newsletter (not a Substack, just the same old newsletter I’ve been sending in different formats and with varying degrees of regularity since 2013) and the passionate, outsized response told me I am not alone in these thoughts.

Women Without Kids is now out in paperback! You should be able to find it wherever books are sold online 🙏

Personally, I am a paperback girl. They are more transportable and more affordable, and so I’m thrilled that this edition is now available.

I also made a few revisions to the manuscript for this printing, most substantially to a chapter titled “Sexual Evolution,” the thesis of which can be summed up thusly:

“Male sexual entitlement has its roots in the underlying dogma of heteropatriarchy: male entitlement to female bodies as the means of reproduction.”

It is the edgiest chapter in the book and has been the hardest to get right, and I’m grateful to my publisher for giving me the opportunity to take another pass at it. I’m also giving you the option to download the chapter for FREE at the link in my bio 🐣
